1 medium beets, loose

1 cored spartan apples, seasonal variety of the week

1/2 cup fat-free plain yogurt

2 tablespoons natural cocoa powder

1/4 cup water

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 pinch ground cinnamon

to taste amber maple syrup (no 2, grade c)

Put all ingredients in a blender and blend away! No need to steam or roast the beet beforehand.

Optional additions: 1/2 a frozen banana, 1 tsp flax seeds, a few almonds, protein powder

Chef’s notes: This smoothie tastes like a dessert but is healthy enough for breakfast! The beets give it a great colour and an earthy sweetness. The optional ingredients give it a little more staying power, but are, of course, optional!
