Organic Vegetarian Jamaican Patties

These Jamaican spiced vegetarian patties made with a richly satisfying filling will have you questioning if you are really eating ‘beef’.

We developed an all-natural meatless alternative using black beans, walnuts for texture and flavour and paired it with spices and sweet onion. The filling is delicious on its own but even better wrapped with a turmeric-hued pastry crust. Serve with a bright effervescent bowl of tropical mango-jalapeno dressed slaw.

Recipe Ingredients    

  • 2 garlic cloves  
  • 1 onion  
  • 1 tbsp. walnuts  
  • 1 carrot  
  • 2 cups cabbage  
  • 6 tbsp. olive oil  
  • 1 cup black beans  
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • 2 tbsp. Fresh City’s Jerk Spice Mix 
  • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour  
  • Mabel’s Patty Dough, thawed 
  • 2 tbsp. honey  
  • 1 lime  
  • salt, to taste  
  • 3 tbsp. Fresh City’s Tropical Topper 
  • 3 tbsp. Fresh City’s Mango-Jalapeno Dressing

Preheat the Oven and Prepare Ingredients  

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. 
  • Peel and mince the garlic.  
  • Peel and finely dice the onion.

  • Crush the walnuts with the broad side of your knife. 
  • Wash and grate carrot.

  • Wash and shred cabbage, using a knife.

Make the Filling  

  • Heat 1 tbsp. olive oil in a skillet on medium heat.  
  • Add onions and sauté until translucent. Add garlic to skillet and continue sautéing for 2 minutes.  
  • Reduce heat to medium-low. Add beans and Fresh City's Jerk Spice Mix. Stir and mash beans with a fork while cooking, about 5 minutes.  Add 2 tbsp. of water.

  • Sprinkle on the walnuts and stir. 
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool. 

Fill the Patties & Bake  

  • Dust a work surface with flour. 
  • Cut the dough ball in half, and roll out each dough piece into an even circle.

  • Add about 3-4 tbsp. filling mixture to the centre of each circle. Dip a finger in water and wet the edges of the dough.

  • Fold in half and press edges to seal.  
  • Take a fork and crimp edges. Cut off any excess dough to make it look neat. The patty must be sealed otherwise the inside will leak out!  use a knife to press edges of the dough to seal
  • Lightly brush each patty with 1/2 tbsp. olive oil and bake on lined baking sheet for 30 minutes.

Prepare the Slaw  

While the patties are cooking, make the slaw.  

  • Juice the lime in a large bow.  Add honey, 1/4 cup olive oil, salt, and pepper and whisk together.  
  • Add shredded cabbage and grated carrots to the large bowl. Mix well until everything is well coated.

Bring it All Together  

  • Remove patties from the oven. Allow to cool for 2-3 minutes.  
  • Serve patties with slaw and Fresh City's Mango-Jalapeno Sauce  
  • Enjoy!
