Why Eat Local?
We’re all familiar with the buzz about ‘buying local’. When it comes to food, it’s obvious that buying local is better for our farmers, but did you know it’s also better for our environment, our bodies, and our wallets?
Here are 5 reasons why you should eat more local food now!
1. It’s better for the environment
The average food item in Canada has travelled about 2,400km to land on your plate! Hard to imagine? Consider this: if you’re in Toronto eating a bunch of green kale that was grown in California, that’s a whopping 56 calories of fossil fuel energy to deliver 1 calorie of your food to your plate. Local = less fuel, it’s as simple as that!
2. It builds food security
Buying from local farmers today helps ensure there will be farms in our community tomorrow. That is a matter of importance for food security, especially in light of an uncertain energy future and our current reliance on fossil fuels to produce, package, distribute and store food.
3. It is healthier and tastes better
Eating a freshly harvested tomato tastes so much better than eating one that spent weeks in a truck and supermarket! Not to mention, fresher food is much more nutrient dense.
4. It builds community and preserves open space
Did you know Canada’s best farmland lies just outside of Toronto and much of it has already been paved over? Buying local means supporting local farmers and preserving precious farmland for generations to come. It also helps us foster a deeper relationship with our food by connecting with the people who grow it!
5. It’s good for our economy (and our wallets)!
According to Canada’s Food Price Report, food prices will rise in Canada in 2017 thanks to a weaker dollar and the rising cost of farming in America. The good news: local food prices are much more stable since they are not effected by things like currency fluctuations and trade agreements. Eating local means more money stays in our community. Every $1.00 spent at Fresh City generates $2.84 for the local economy!
