Good day Fresh City customers! With all the rush that comes with spring preparation – farm planning, seed ordering, seedling growing – I am glad to have found some time to sit down and introduce myself to you fine folks. My name is Connor DesJardins and this season I have joined the Fresh City team as Assistant Farm Manager at the Downsview Park location, along with delivering boxes. Before moving to Toronto I lived in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on a 5-acre hobby farm. My mother bought the farm eight years ago so she could have somewhere to own horses. When moving out to the city limits I started to become very interested in growing my own food and living a more sustainable life. That summer I started working on a 7 acre vegetable farm down the road. The farm started all their transplants from seed and sold their produce through CSA (Community Shared/Supported Agriculture) and the farmers’ market twice a week. Working with these folks showed me the meaning of a hard days work and gave me the inspiration to take the next step. After I finished high school I went to the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus where I graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture April of 2011. While in Ridgetown I was lucky to be exposed to the expertise of many researchers in different fields ranging from plant science, to soil principles, to environmental awareness, and most fun of all the production classes which included fruit trees, field veggies, and greenhouse veggies. Needless to say I left Ridgetown very eager to start my own farm adventure. In the spring of 2011, I cultivated approximately ¾ of an acre at my mom’s place and got right to the races. My main priorities with this plot were to try and build up the sandy acidic soil structure that had never been farmed, along with getting a decent crop. Since it was only my first year I decided to sell to only one restaurant in town along with friends and family.  This worked out well because there was always enough produce to spread evenly. In the fall of 2011 I made the big move down to Toronto to be with my girlfriend who is currently studying at OCAD. After a few months of missing the farm and getting my hands dirty, I stumbled across Fresh City online and immediately went and started helping out at the greenhouse. Working alongside Phil and the member farmers has reassured me that local, sustainable agriculture really can be the answer, we all share a positive attitude to eating healthy, and knowing where our food came from. You are what you eat! Well that’s all for now, I look forward to updating everyone throughout the season. Take care, Connor DesJardins Assistant Farm Manager, Fresh City Farms
