Homemade Playdough with Natural Dyes

Jennifer Bartoli

Looking for an at-home activity to do with your younger kids? A few minutes and ingredients you most likely have on hand are all you need to put together homemade playdough.

To colour the playdough, take a look at what spices you have on hand. Here, paprika and turmeric give the dough a vibrant hue, but make it your own by trying it with matcha powder, sumac, cocoa powder or ground herbs.

To make the dough, you'll need:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
1 tbsp cream of tartare
1 tbsp vegetable oil

In a saucepan over medium low heat, mix all the ingredients together until the dough starts to clump together, dry out and is no longer shiny, about 1 minute.

When just cool enough to handle, gather the dough onto a work surface and need until smooth (you may need to add a bit more flour). Divide into portions and add your choice of spices to each piece of dough. Thoroughly knead to dye the dough. To prevent from drying, tightly wrap the dough in plastic wrap and store in an airtight container until ready to use again.

Depending on the spices you use, the dough might transfer and stain certain surfaces or clothing so keep that in mind while your little one is playing away!
