Field Notes: September
Our outdoor farming season is winding down.
The first frost hit last week, signalling the end of most of our field crops. There's still a lot of work to do. We need to clean up fields, plant next year's garlic crop, and transition the greenhouses to winter production.
As another season comes to an end, I want to give a big shout out to the amazing Member Farmers who grow alongside us at our Downsview Park farm. Every year, we share our land and tools with about 15 individuals and groups who grow and market their own vegetables, flowers, and herbs. I've been so impressed by the diversity of crops grown on Member Farmer plots and the quality of their harvests this year. I'm thrilled to say that for the first time in the history of Fresh City, every single one of our 2018 farmers are planning to return to the farm next Spring!
These individuals work incredibly hard to maintain their gardens, even while juggling other jobs and projects. All of our Member Farmers contribute a huge amount of passion, knowledge, and grit to our farm. Fresh City wouldn't be the vibrant place it is without them. Thanks for all you do, Member Farmers!!
