While seeding some beans on Sunday, June 5, Roberto (the landowner) presented me with a package of beans that once belonged to my grandfather. Roberto was my grandfather’s neighbour, and the two would often share plants, seeds, and gardening practices.
Three years ago my grandfather gave Roberto "i fagioli larghi" (large beans - top left corner), which Roberto claimed "are better than meat." I was also presented with three more varieties, again given to him from my grandfather.
These large beans are planted in the inside row.
Roberto claimed that these beans were grown by my grandfather for as long as he can remember (approximately 35 years). Since they have recently passed into my hands, I guess they can now be considered a family heirloom.
