10 Reasons Why Organic Is Better for You

Walk into almost any supermarket and you’ll see a whole section devoted to organic food. While it's clear organic is a growing trend, navigating the maze of food labels, benefits and claims can be confusing! Is organic really better for your health, and what does it really mean?

Regulations vary from country to country, but in Canada organic means 3 KEY THINGS:

1. No GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)
2. No antibiotics or growth hormones fed to animals and no chemicals used to kill pests or weeds
3. No synthetic fertilizers

But those guidelines are only a start. In order to truly understand why eating organic is better for you health (and the planet!), we've compiled a list of 10 reasons you should be eating organic.

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Eat Organic

1. Stop eating chemicals.

A cocktail of chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional farming and present on many of the foods we eat. Every heard of the dirty dozen?

2. Organic food is fresher.

Because it doesn’t contain life-extending preservatives, organic produce is often grown closer to home!

3. It’s better for the environment.

Organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, use less energy, and replenish valuable nutrients in the soil.

4. It’s better for farm workers.

Pesticide-free farming is also better for the humans (and animals!) who live near farms.

5. Organic foods are richer in nutrients.

Organically grown foods have more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and micronutrients than commercially grown foods because the soil is nourished with sustainable farming practices. On average, organically grown foods provide: 21% more iron, 27% more vitamin C, 29% more magnesium and 13% more phosphorus than their conventional counterparts.

6. Avoid GMOs.

While more research needs to be conducted into how genetically modified foods can potentially harm our health, it is certain that GMOs adversely effect the biodiversity of our crops (think monocrops!) and the sustainability of our ecosystems.

7. It’s better for wildlife.

Organic farming increases the diversity of plants and animals because it relies less on chemicals and more on environmentally sustainable farming practices.

8. Organic is more humane.

Organically raised animals are not given harmful antibiotics or growth hormones. They are not fed animal byproducts, which increase the risk of mad cow disease, and they are given more space and access to the outdoors to keep them healthy and happy.

9. Investing in the future.

Putting our money where our mouths are is a powerful way to direct the future of our food system. When we buy organic we are investing in sustainable farming that can be enjoyed for many generations to come!

10. It tastes better!

Well nourished soil produces healthy, strong plants and organic foods are often grown with a focus for taste over appearance (think heirloom tomato varieties!). Don’t believe us? Try it!
